Biography

Rene was born in 1888. Rene is the child of Paulidar Herman and Clothilde Be lotters. He was born in Oostrozebeke, Belgium, a typical agricultural village with lots of farms. Oostrozebeke is a village in the Belgian province of West-Flanders. Also know as Rosebeke. Rene immigrated to the USA with his parents and siblings in 1897.

Battle Creek (MI) Enquirer: Wednesday, July 23, 1969, Page 27 Obituaries Long-time school trustee dies ---MARSHALL -- Rene A. Herman, 80, of 14257 Michigan Ave., in Marshall Township, a lifelong area farmer and a director of the Conly School for 27 years, died Tuesday in Leila Hospital, Battle Creek, where he was transferred March 31 from Oaklawn Hospital. ---He was born in Oostrozebeke, Belgium and came to the United States in 1897, settling in Marshall. ---He attended St. Mary Catholic School and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Calhoun County Farm Bureau and the Marshall Chamber of Commerce. ---Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Claerhout; daughters, Mrs. Fred (Pauline) Steel of Jackson, Mrs. Ladd (Marry Lou) Wolf of Grandville and Mrs. Kenneth (Irma) Woods of Marshall; sons, James Herman of Marshall Township, Robert of Lee Township, Rene C. and John, both of Battle Creek, and Paul and George, both of Jackson; sisters, Mrs. Fred (Mary) Scharping of Kalamazoo and Mrs. Edward (Virginia) Miller of Jackson; and brothers, Mark Herman of Marshall, Paul of Jackson and O. J. of Bay City.

Page 31 State Funerals HERMAN, RENE A. Rosary will be said at 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening from the Court Funeral Home, Marshall, with requiem mass Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. from St. Marys Church with Father Julius Hengesbach of the church officiating, assisted by Father Lawrence Woods of Kalamazoo. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery.
